Wow, what a week

Last week was a COMPLETE bust. I think I have successfully fought off the ilk that took out my whole family last week. I didn't get enough sleep at all last week, and as such, did not go to the Y at all.

This week, however, is a whole new week, and I was at the Y at 5:00 am and did the W3D1 workout, slightly modified, as I doubled each of the halves once. So instead of doing the 90 second jog, 90 second walk, 3 minute jog, 3 minute walk twice; I did 90 sec jog, 90 sec walk, 90 sec jog, 90 sec walk, 3 min jog, 3 min walk, 90 sec jog, 90 sec walk, 3 min jog, 3 min walk, 3 min jog, 3 min walk. My legs hurt now, but I was able to do the time without much discomfort. I am pleased with that given that I did zero last week. Tomorrow I am thinking I will do a "quick" 20 on the elliptical. This keeps me still on track for 5K on December 6, so I will be switching to distance in a couple of weeks. 14 laps to a mile at the Y, which makes it tough to track 1/4's but by then I should be only concerned with 1/2's and wholes.

No workouts

No workouts over the weekend or this morning. We woke up on Saturday to 1of4 complaining of a headache and a slight fever. So I took 2of4 and 3of4 to the local Onion Festival, and watched 2of4 dance. Then went out for lunch. I didn't want them hanging out at home with their big sister feeling bad and them running around the neighborhood. Sunday came and 1,2 and 3 are hot to the touch and feeling droopy, as an added bonus the Mrs. wasn't feeling good either. So, I worked a short day, and kept an eye on everyone. Last night, everyone was feelin' down and not at all up to speed. A little motrin and off to bed with everyone early. I ended up dosing each one late in the night, which is why no workout this morning. I was up three times last night, and only got about 4 hours total sleep. Not what I was looking for. I just hope that 4of4 can skate by this round of the flu. I don't need the stress of having a baby sick.

Sorry, been a bit busy

I guess the whole, post everyday thing is going to be a bit hard to do. I am keeping this place "on the down-low" from the fam. Not for any reason other than I just don't need them yammering at me about my writing. I hit the Y yesterday and today for 30 minutes each day. I was a bit tired today so I took it kinda slow. I still hit 2 miles on the ole elliptical so that isn't too bad.

The real news is that I am now going to register for a 5K run that is scheduled for December 7th. This gives me just shy of what I was planning for hitting the 5K mark, but I should be able to do it. I have been doing the cardio for the last 4 weeks, I just need to get the running back. I think as far as the Couch-to-5K program goes, I can jump to week 2 or 3 and feel pretty good about it. I will actually hit the Y in the morning and I will let you know. If I can kick-off at week three that will put me in great shape for the Jingle Bell run. The goal will be to finish the 5K at a run.

I will look forward to the Shamrock and others as the new year approaches!

Monday and Tuesday

So, I blew off yesterday, and I got up a few minutes late today. I got in a solid 25 on the ol' elliptical, so I don't feel too bad. I will start the running program tomorrow. Wish my knees luck. I also checked the weight this morning after my 25 and a liter of water, and was half a pound below 200. I attribute this to missing dinner last night, or at least a non-liquid dinner. I did have two beers, so I didn't need the calories.

I have to work a little harder on the drinking and go back to my strict no alcohol on "school nights" as it were. I think I am going to go to a six-day a week program for the next few weeks to see how I feel. I will probably taper that back to a 4 or 5 day program, but I want to get the weight lifting started and I think that if I do the running for 20 minutes and/or the elliptical for 20 everyday, six days a week, I can get in some weight lifting after each day, though I might just drop the weights on elliptical days and do 30-40 minutes on the machine.

I also need to schedule a physical. I'm not looking forward to that as I am now over 40 and I get the FULL lube-oil-filter treatment.

Friday, and a good quick workout

Today I got to the Y a little late, and set the time for 20 minutes. I pushed for a faster go at it then I would have for 30, so I almost clocked the same distance. Not bad for only the fourth week. Next week I will start the C25K program. Slightly modified but close enough to count. I will let you know how I do and what I do differently from the actual training plan.

Tonight, I am adding a few extra calories into the system in the form of a "muscle relaxant." Cuba Libras for me! I had a good week, and I work a bit tomorrow, so tonight the Mrs. and I are having a little bit of fun.

Not sure if I will be posting over the weekends, we will have to see how things go from here.

October 1--no real workout

So this morning about 3:00 am 3of4 comes in and wants to sleep with me and the Mrs. Well, who am I to turn down a little cuddle-time with one of my girls. I started to send her to bed, but the dejected look killed me, so I reset the alarm clock and cuddled up. So today, while at work, I will do come crunches and some rubber-band work. I sit on an exercise ball, and it came with a resistance band. So, when I feel tired or a little bored with what I'm working on, I do some crunches or "curls" or whatever. I get the blood flowing and I can read manuals or e-mails while going 'til it huts a bit, then switch arms. If I'm doing presses I just go until I'm sore, there isn't enough resistance to tear anything, so it is all toning and strengthening without bulking up. I'll probably start working with weights in the next couple of weeks. I would like to add a little bulk, I have always felt that as large as I am, I lack the mass that I should have. I am easily the largest person in my family. That is not to say that I am fat, but that I hide my 200 pounds quite well. I don't have much of a belly, and can go 30 minutes on an elliptical trainer and stay under the MHR while clocking in 2 "miles". I think that is a GREAT place to start off.

Getting Started

So, this is the first post to a new blog. What is the point of this blog, not much. I will post my daily workout and my progress towards getting into shape to run as a team member for the world-famous Hood-to-Coast relay in Oregon next year. It has been a long time since I ran, and it has been a year and a half since I had hernia surgery. We shall see how my 41 year old knees and shins do. I have been to the gym pretty solidly over the last few weeks on the eliptical trainers trying to get some cardio work in and some leg strengthening in before *actually* starting in on the running. That will begin next week along with some weight training.

I hope if you found this blog looking for inspiration or training advice, I can help. Well, we shall see how that goes. I have a few ideas about how to get from 0 to 3 miles in 9 weeks, we will have to take this one day at a time and see how we do.
